What is a Crypto Token Buyback?
A token buyback is when a crypto project uses its revenue to purchase its own tokens from the open market. This mechanism, similar to stock buybacks in traditional finance, can increase token value by reducing circulating supply or distributing value to holders.
DeFi protocols like AAVE, Maker (MKR), and Uniswap have implemented various buyback mechanisms using protocol revenue from lending fees, stability fees, and trading fees.
Types of Token Buyback Mechanisms
- Burn: Tokens are permanently destroyed, reducing total supply and potentially increasing scarcity.
- Lock: Tokens are locked in the protocol treasury, removing them from circulation.
- Distribute: Bought-back tokens are distributed to stakers or holders as rewards.
